Welcome to Bracketville---Idle Thoughts Edition

One reason Dwight Howard left the Lakers for Houston, according to a widely quoted source, was because Kobe Bryant wouldn't "pass the torch." Good grief. What did Howard expect? Kobe won't even pass the ball.
Raise your hand if you were surprised by the drama and suspension surrounding Marshall Henderson. Hmmm---just what I suspected, no hands in the air.
This season, the ACC will be only one of the six BCS conferences that can fit all its members within a single time zone.
It pretty obvious that Coach K is the highest paid coach in the ACC. Would you believe the second highest paid is FSU’s Leonard Hamilton.
Since Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski took over USA Basketball, we have won every title in international basketball: U17, U19, senior and the Olympics.
80% of NC State’s scoring and 77% of their rebounding from last year’s team has left the building.
Wisconsin visits Virginia Dec. 4 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. First team to 30 wins.
All five starters for the Duke Women return. They will face eight nonconference foes that made the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
UVA lost just one rotation player (Jontel Evans).
Four starters are back for Towson. Watch out for Jerrelle Benimon---he could be a double-double guy.
If you knew that Travis McKie (Wake Forest) enters the season as the ACC’s leading returning career scorer and rebounder, you really know your ACC Basketball. He has started every game he’s played in.
SMU returns their top five scorers from last year.
Rodney Hood is just the fourth player to transfer to Duke in the Mike Krzyzewski era.
Florida Gulf Coast returns four of their top five scorers…as does Southern…same for Cal.
La Salle brings back three double-digit scorers…same for Harvard. Look out for Harvard freshman Zena Edosomwan, a 6’8” post.
With the exception of Jack Cooley, almost everyone returns for Notre Dame.
Creighton brings back four starters and a bunch of experienced reserves.
Pitt lost four rotation mainstays.
Purdue returns four starters.
Everyone from BC’s young group is back.
Truism: having the most difficult schedule is not essential to building a championship team. Kentucky 2012 (25th overall—79th nonconference), UNC 2009 (overall 22nd---noncon 93rd), Kansas 2008 {overall 50th---155th nonconference}.
Not so fast: Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk.
One more thing: John Wooden said things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.
Congratulations! You made it to the end -- celebrate by watching some basketball…in November.

Randolph Scott on TCM

Saddle Up: This Monday, TCM, as part of their Summer Under the Stars, celebrates the westerns of Randolph Scott. This is a movie banquet for me.

This western feast includes three of the seven movies where Budd Boetticher directed Scott. These have become classic in the genre, most were scripted by Burt Kennedy.

They feature spectacular landscapes; terse dialogue and all were low budget that looked like a million bucks.

“Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend” was James Garner’s first western.

“Ride Lonesome” was the debut for James Coburn.
